To know what to do about your own cards, you have to make note of what the others in the game at the table are doing with theirs. Your own feeling is also a good basis, provided you know enough to make good judgments about different situations. The better informed you are, the better you will become at determining which bets you should make.

In addition to knowing what bets you should make and when you should make them, it is also essential for you to be aware of when you should stop betting altogether. You can use the best reasoning possible and have all the odds in your favor and still fall apart when it comes to the community cards and particularly the river card, if you’re still betting.

In this game, you want to be aware of everything that is going on, not just what to do with your own hand. So watch other players and try to determine when they are bluffing, while being able to get away with your own bluff. An advanced knowledge of Texas hold em starting hands doesn’t necessarily mean you will win, but it makes it much more likely.
